PSU and cable planning for SFF
6 min read · SFX vs SFX-L, modular cables, and why cable bulk ruins more ITX builds than wattage ratings.
Mini-ITX cases specify SFX or SFX-L power supplies. The wattage number on the box matters less than whether the unit fits with modular cables attached, whether the fan orientation is correct, and whether cables can route without blocking the GPU or CPU cooler.
Cable bulk ruins more ITX builds than insufficient wattage. A 750 W SFX unit with stiff full-length cables can be harder to build with than a 650 W unit with flexible short cables or a custom cable set.
SFX vs SFX-L
Standard SFX PSUs are 100 mm deep. SFX-L units extend to about 125 mm and often fit larger, quieter fans, useful for high-wattage builds that would otherwise spin a small fan hard. Many modern ITX cases accept SFX-L, but always check the spec: some sandwich cases only fit standard SFX depth.
Verify fan orientation against your case’s ventilation pattern. Some cases require the PSU fan to face mesh; others pull air from a CPU chamber. Installing a PSU backwards can silently worsen thermals.
- SFX: 100 mm depth; universal in most ITX cases.

- Confirm modular cable clearance when plugged in.
Modular cables and length
Fully modular PSUs let you connect only the leads you need, essential in tight cases. Stock cables are often sized for ATX towers and excess length becomes clutter. Short cable kits or custom-length cables from reputable SFF vendors reduce pressure on GPU and side panels.
Pre-bend 24-pin, EPS, and GPU leads on a table before installing the motherboard. In sandwich layouts, route CPU power before sliding the GPU into the rear chamber. Once the spine is closed, small connectors become difficult to reach.

Wattage and transient spikes
Modern GPUs spike above sustained TDP briefly. Quality SFX units from established brands handle this better than no-name high-wattage units. If you are pairing a high-end GPU with a compact PSU, read reviews focused on noise, voltage stability, and connector temperatures, not just wattage stickers.
Single-rail vs multi-rail matters less for most ITX builders than physical fit and cable flexibility. Prioritize fit first, then acoustics, then headroom.
Build-order tips
- Install PSU last in some traditional cases; first in others, check your case manual.
- Zip-tie bundles loosely; tight ties make rerouting painful.
- Leave one unused modular port accessible if you might add storage later.
- Test power-on with cables routed but panels off before final assembly.
